RNIC, please join us in welcoming author Tia Kelly to our site! She has stopped by to tell us about her latest release, The Love Sessions. Tia is also giving away an e-copy of The Love Sessions to three lucky winners! We’ll tell you more about that shortly, but first, let’s get to know our featured author.
Tell us about yourself.
Hello RNIC. I’m a little on the shy side, so please bear with me. I am a die hard romantic, but I also have a few tomboy ways. (We can thank my male cousins for that one.) I love to read and always carry a book, whether print or electronic. I also love sports, enjoy playing with my food before it hits the plate (you should see me in the kitchen), and I love to travel to new places. That probably sounds more like a profile for a dating website doesn’t it? Perhaps I should add my zodiac sign and say that I like to take walks in the park, too. *smile*
What type of music do you listen to?
I listen to just about anything. My music library covers everything from Motown, rap and R&B to the Beatles, with a little jazz, blues and country sprinkled in between. Music also helps bring my stories to life. I was blessed to write music video treatments and it was fun seeing my stories play out a few times with a great song as the soundtrack. My novels are no different sometimes, as a song might inspire a scene or even a story. That’s what happened to “Can’t Be Friends” by Trey Songz. It introduced me to my character Donovan Sinclair (“Give Me You” and “The Love Sessions”).
What are your favorite types of movies to watch?
I enjoy romantic comedies, tear jerkers and action movies. I recently saw Fast and Furious 6. Afterwards, I wanted to run out to steal a sports car with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as my accomplice. That would have been an exciting car chase with a little Tia Kelly romance tossed in along the way!
Short answer favorites:
Dessert – Crème Brulee
City – San Diego
Type of hero – The man’s man alpha male type
Type of heroine -Has a backbone, perfectly flawed with dreams dancing in her eyes
Actor – Denzel (he makes acting and everything else look so easy)
Actress -old school Julia Roberts
Band/solo singer – Stevie Wonder
Color – slate blue
What flowers would be in your ideal bouquet?
Gerber daisies (they just smile at you), calla lilies (caress you), sunflowers (bring out the wild, natural side) and roses (remind you to love someone)… Maybe I wouldn’t put them all in the same bouquet though.
What is your dream car and why?
Oooh…. Just one? I love fast cars, but there is something about a Jaguar that screams classic with a hint of speed. At this moment, I would pick a Jag, but that could easily change with my mood.
Tell me your favorite pick up line, and did it work on you or for you?
I recently walked in front of a deejay and he stopped whatever song he was playing to turn on “Baby Got Back.” Then he left the booth to ask me for my number. Entertaining, but no it did not work.
Why should readers consider buying your books?
My books have a plot (actually, a few), but they are also character-driven stories. I believe it’s the natural chemistry between each character that sparks the romance in my work. I don’t write my stories, my characters do. I think readers appreciate that.
I often use the phrase “where falling in love meets happily ever after” to describe my work. I love writing just to get to the happily ever after while watching people fall in love, but first I take readers through stories that they can hopefully identify with. In The Love Sessions, I tackle some serious topics (cyber bullying, eating disorders, loss of a loved one, poor communication), but I also bring real characters that exist in our lives today. I hope people can escape to another place through the pages in my books, but when they return to reality they are touched and inspired.
What inspired you to write your latest release?
Every now and then, I read a book that makes me long for more. Not all stories need a sequel, but sometimes you wonder what happens after the happily ever after. This is common especially with romance, where characters tend to fall in love at first sight. You wonder if it is really love and if it will last through the test of time.
The Love Sessions is the page after “the end” when you see the real tests in a romance. The test that can either tear a couple apart or make that bond stronger.
Do you have a single book or character that’s dear to your heart, and why?
Donovan Sinclair. Donovan Sinclair. Can I say it again? Yes, Donovan Sinclair. He just reminds me of that great guy many of us want to know and meet. He has a great personality, good looks and loves his woman dearly. His love for her and the way he carries himself makes him just sexy to me. Of course, not everything in Donovan’s life is perfect and he has a quite few imperfections, but when I had to write about a major turning point in his life it was difficult. I never wanted to bring a good character that kind of pain and watch it break him.
The Love Sessions – Description
Four couples discover the hard way that wedding vows are meant to be more than just words while attending a premarital retreat in the Pennsylvania Poconos with therapist Dr. Savannah Harper.
Dr. Harper greeted the couple, noticing their body language first. The woman with dark, flowing locks and flawless complexion was failing miserably at hiding her sadness, focusing on random items around the room. The man had warm golden eyes, but his face was cold and distant. Savannah knew right then that she was their last hope at saving their marriage.
“Who wants to tell me why you are here?” Dr. Harper asked. “Alexis? Terrence?”
Neither of them budged. She watched both of them turn their bodies away from the other.
“Anyone?” Dr. Harper tried again, perusing the forms they completed before their first session. Another patient referred them to her, but neither mentioned the reason why they requested her services.
“Fine, I’ll go,” Alexis hissed. She uncrossed her legs and crossed them in the other direction. Her dislike for the man next to her was evident, as she rolled her eyes at him. “My husband and I no longer love each other.”
“That’s not true,” Terrence argued. “If I didn’t love you, I would not be here.”
“If you loved me, you wouldn’t have said the things that you did to me.”
Dr. Harper threw a hand up to halt the bickering. “Okay, why don’t we start with what was said and we will work to reveal the other layers from there. Alexis, what did Terrence say that upset you?”
Savannah hoped the explanation would offer a glimpse into the couple’s marital problems.
“He said I was a kept woman,” Alexis revealed.
Terrence refuted, “No, what I said was you have been used to men keeping you financially afloat. Now at the first hint of financial troubles you are ready to bail.”
“That’s not true!” Alexis shouted.
“As soon as you saw that bank statement, you packed up my suitcase and threatened to kick me out!”
“It was more than the bank statement. Terry, you lied to me!”
“I never lied,” Terrence said, lowering his voice. The doctor easily recognized the pain behind his words. “Alexis, everything happened so fast. I tried to tell you, but I just didn’t know how to find the right words to tell you.”
“Try, honey we’re broke or baby, I blew through every dime we had.”
“I didn’t blow anything!”
Alexis stared him down, arching a perfect brow. “Oh really? Then what would you call it?”
“I was helping my mother.”
“That’s not all you did,” Alexis argued. “You were also looking out for her.”
Dr. Harper watched Terrence fall back in his chair defeated. There was no question that her was a source of their pain.
