Coming Undone by Avril Ashton is a short but well-written romance about two people who have to trust each other in order to bring down a shared nemesis. Even though the ending is satisfying, I was nonetheless sorry to see the story end.
Caught up in a life built on secrets and lies, McKenna Lacey is the most recent mistress of narcissistic businessman, Salim Najal. Having found out her biggest secret, Najal blackmails her and uses her body for his own selfish and sexually sadistic needs. She bides her time while constantly under the vigilance of his trusted bodyguards and chauffer, but doesn’t trust when a way out of her circumstances comes from the most unlikely of places – the scarred man who breaks into her home, Ren Junior, better known as RJ.
RJ has his own history with Salim Najal. On the search for his missing friend Stella, RJ thinks McKenna might be able to provide answers. Angry and looking for revenge after being thrown in an Irish prison by Najal for five years, RJ intrudes on McKenna’s life and home to give her a chance to help him find Stella and give McKenna a chance to help herself as well.
The breakthrough moment in their unlikely relationship comes when McKenna is emotionally broken from Najal’s abuse and a tragic turn of events in her family life and turns to RJ for comfort and solace. He discovers that, despite the choices she’s made, she is beautiful, vibrant and courageous.
What follows is a sex scene that is hot, hot, hot!!! The two characters connect both physically and emotionally. Although the bonding between McKenna and RJ takes place solely within the confines of McKenna’s home, Ms. Ashton is successful in letting the readers inside the characters’ heads and hearts. There is no ambivalence about their thoughts, feeling and motives. I just wish the story had been longer.

Laurel Cremant is an opinionated author and reader of romance with a wicked sense of humor. RNIC was smart (or crazy) to bring her on as a blogger. In 2016 she took over the management of this site and relishes her new title of “Overlord of Awesome”
