Please welcome Delaney Diamond! RNIC is a stop on her virtual book tour to promote her latest release – The Blind Date. Take it away Delaney!
I’m Delaney Diamond and I’m the site manager of Romance Novels in Color. I love to read and have loved it since I was a child. I read everything I could get my hands on and fit within my school schedule and had a really good relationship with my school librarian. Lol. I was born in the U.S. Virgin Islands but now I’m a Georgia Peach, living and writing in Atlanta. My brother, sister, and I are very close, especially me and my sister. We live in the same neighborhood and can walk to each other’s houses. My favorite pastimes are reading, writing, cooking, and traveling.
Today I’m promoting my latest release, The Blind Date. Before I share an excerpt, I thought that since book clubs are very popular among those of us who read a lot, I’d offer tips on how to make them a little more interesting and fun.
4 Fun Ways to Jazz Up Your Book Club Meetings
- Make it a theme party. Using the setting of the book of the month, bring snacks representative of the region or country. Say for example France is the setting for a novel that your club is reading. How about indulging in some great French wine? You could get baguettes from your local bakery and add an hors d’oeuvre platter complete with French cheeses and fruit. Or how about a mezze platter for a book with a Turkish theme? Encourage members who’ve visited the location in the novel to bring along photos and souvenirs to share with the group.
- Watch the movie. This may sound strange since it should be about reading, but so many books are turned into movies nowadays, this one will be easy to do and will be fun. Pick a book that’s also been released as a movie. Watch the movie as a group; discuss the differences and what you liked and didn’t like between the book and the film adaptation.
- Blast from the past. Remember the book that got you started reading romance novels? Have everyone write the name of the first romance novel they remember reading and place them in a bag. Have the president pull one out and whatever is chosen will be next month’s read. At the next meeting, discuss how romance novels have changed and how they’ve stayed the same.
- Read a novel outside of your comfort zone. As I mentioned, I’m the site manager of Romance Novels in Color, and one of the things I hear people say is that they can’t relate to books that have diverse characters. Well, I challenge you to read a book outside of your comfort zone. We have a host of choices on the site of books that were written by authors who write diverse characters. If you’re black, try a book with an Asian heroine. If you’re white, try a book with a black heroine. You’re Asian? How about a Native American hero? Books with protagonists who don’t look like you are not that different from any other book you’re used to reading. Try one. You have no idea what you’ve been missing.
Blurb for The Blind Date
One night changes everything . . . again.
Years ago, when Ryan Stewart saw Shawna Ferguson, it was love at first sight. Unfortunately, he wasn’t a free man, and his deception caused him to lose her after a weekend that changed his life.
When Shawna’s sister and brother-in-law set her up on a blind date, she has no idea it’s with Ryan, with whom she’d spent a weekend she wishes she could forget. She reluctantly agrees to finish the date with him, but doing so leaves her vulnerable to his charms and the heat he ignited in her that very first night.
Her brow furrowed. “Why me?” she asked. “Out of all these women walking around out here.”
“There are other women out here?” Ryan looked around at the pedestrians as if seeing them for the first time. “I didn’t even notice. I only have eyes for you.”
A beat later, they both burst out laughing.
“Good one,” Shawna said. “Have you used it before?”
“First time. I thought of it on the fly. Good though, right?” He stopped grinning and looked her in the eyes to make sure she knew how serious he was. “But I meant it. Let me buy you dinner.”
“Ryan, I’m not interested in seeing anyone right now. You seem very sweet, but I’ll be leaving in a couple of days, so I don’t think this is a good idea.”
He couldn’t let her get away. She had to say yes. He’d come to Chicago to clear his head, and somehow he knew she’d play an important role in helping him finalize the decision he’d been struggling to make.
“It’s only dinner.” He could see her waver as she shifted from one foot to the other and tucked her purse closer to her body. “When do you get off?”
She laughed nervously. “This is ridiculous.”
“No, it’s not. You have to eat and I want to feed you. Makes sense to me.” He hoped that by keeping the conversation light, she wouldn’t overthink it and slip from his grasp, leaving him standing there with no way to see her again. “What kind of food do you like?”
Shawna shook her head in defeat. “French cuisine is my favorite.”
“And when do you get off?”
“I’ll be here at five-fifty, waiting.”
“If you’re not, it’s no big deal.” She shrugged.
He fixed his gaze on her face. “I hope that’s not true.”
She hesitated, tilting her head slightly, brown eyes observing him as if trying to figure him out. She obviously still doubted his sincerity.
“I’ll see you at six, Ryan Stewart.”
