Short and packed with enough hotness to keep you satisfied, but more than a little bit quirky. My latest date, you ask? No, this is Out of the Cold by Giselle Renarde.
Amira is quite taken with Keith, a stranger she met during a first aid class. After much internal debate, Amira sends Keith a steamy email about her sexual fantasy starring him. An email she swiped from the instructor’s sign-in sheet by the way. The fun begins when Keith responds with his continuation of her fantasy laced with sexy details that surpass Amira’s own. This is quite unbelievable to Amira because she never knew that Keith was aware she existed. His fantasy is just as hot as Amira’s. The big question that looms though: is this really Keith’s fantasy? Turns out it isn’t. Brace yourself for the quirky.
When I first start reading, I thought OK, this is different. A good part of the story comes from Amira and Keith’s emails and their subsequent meeting. However, something just didn’t sit right with me with the story. This is a stranger that she met in a first aid class? Or did they know each other before? I had more questions than answers. In the beginning, it seems like he’s a stranger, but toward the end there are hints that perhaps they knew each other from school. (I believe they’re both students at University – a term used in Canada, the setting of the story.) However, I had more questions than answers which kept me thinking about the background instead of enjoying the exchange between the two characters.
But the sex? Renarde definitely scores with the sex throughout this short 40 page turner. The sex throughout the email exchange, which ranges from believable to fantasy, has just enough mix of steam and rawness to keep you turning the pages. So, kudos on the sex scenes, but the smaller details, the ones in my opinion which are important, help to make or break a story and keep readers coming back for more, are missing for me. If you’re looking for a quick, winter read with some good sex scenes, but you don’t have lofty, high expectations, give this one a try.
