Trail blazing is new again, we learn who really reads the most, Amtrak is the new way to travel, and romance readers are told something they already know.
Freelance writer and lover of romance Bobbi Dumas wrote an interesting article for The Huffington Post regarding how romance authors and books are blazing a trail of equality regarding gay rights.
“As a vocal romance novel fan as well as a less public but still ardent gay rights advocate, I have been delighted to notice that more and more, bestsellers in the romance genre are including gay and lesbian couples as part of the landscape. Noteworthy on every level, but since the mainstream romance genre is sometimes considered conservative, and is very popular with many socially conservative readers, I find this new aspect to the books both fascinating and potentially influential.”

Have you ever wondered which countries spend the most time reading? Well wonder no longer, the lovely folks over at Mental Floss have done the math and research for you. The results were surprising and not all at once. India came in at #1 and the US at #22. However, I do call foul in that I don’t think they polled romance readers 🙂 If they did I think the results would have been much different.

Amtrak wants to give writers a free ride and I heartily support that effort. Amtrak is testing out a nifty idea, a travelling writer’s studio. They want to offer writers a free train ride , where the author spends their time writing during the trip. Talk about getting away from all distractions…
“A lot is still up in the air with regards to a future program. Quinn described it as “an idea dreamed up by Amtrak fans and customers,” and a lot of the details still need hashing out. “We would’ve never known until really in the last 48 hours what type of response a program like this would warrant, and we have been pleasantly surprised,” Quinn said, so the outline being formulated is very new. But the goal, eventually, is to “engage with writers several times a month.” There may be a “tiered approach,” though the specifics aren’t fully worked out, with the focus on individuals with a strong social media presence.”

Salon.com reported on something that many readers of romance have known forever. That the “literary” community looks down its nose at the romance genre. The article covered some great points and is worth a read.
“Women read more books than men. Yet every year, according to counts conducted by VIDA, most major publications run more book reviews by men than by women, and review more books by men than by women. In 2013, for example, the London Review of Books had 195 male book reviewers to 43 women reviewers: a ratio of almost 4-to-1. The New York Review of Books was in the same ballpark, with 212 male reviewers to 52 female ones. In a world with more female readers than male ones, how does that happen?”
