Earthen, by Rae Lynn Blue is the latest installment in her Dragon’s Keep Series. I thoroughly enjoyed the story. I was at a decided disadvantage because I have not read the first two books in the series- Firebreather and Sea Dragon. While I enjoyed the story of Zihao and Sonya, and do feel it can be read as a stand-alone story, I believe if I had read Draco & Anika’s and Ryuu & Angelina’s stories I would have understood what was happening in this story better.
Reading a paranormal story that makes no attempt to be grounded in our reality is always difficult and this story took me a couple of chapters to get the feel for the reality of the world Ms. Blue created. Because of this difficulty Earthen, while a short story, was not a quick read.
The story is based on dragon classism and how Zihao and Sonya were not only victims of this separation, but the new generation set on breaking it down. The love between Zihao and Sonya was evident from the first chapter in the book and it was a pleasure to see how that love overcame the obstacles by the conclusion of the story. Being a HEA story, you knew they would eventually get together, but for this reader that journey is what makes a story. I must say that the revelation of who the traitor in the den was while shocking, didn’t have the same effect since I did not know the family backstory. I will go back and read the first two stories in this series to see if I missed anything in my interpretation of this story.
I recommend this story to all, AFTER they have read the first two.
