Man’s Best Friend is a short story involving Christopher, a white police officer with the K-9 unit and Samson, an African American alpha shape shifter. Christopher and Samson meet by chance after Samson, in his dog form, rescues a child from a burning house. Samson is then taken to the local animal shelter and Christopher, who is seeking a new K-9 partner, happens to stumble upon the shifter and chooses to adopt him.
This story had promise, the writing was strong and the set up of the plot was great. It was only when Samson shifted into his human form in front of Christopher things went a bit awry for me. After initially getting over the shock of finding out his dog was actually human, the attractive level/sexual connection went from 0 to 10. Granted, Christopher and Samson had a connection simply bonding as owner and dog but it was weird to read about a guy going from being stunned that his dog is not in fact a dog to feeling turned on by the nude man standing in front of him. I felt that a bit more time spent with Samson in his human form needed to happen before the sexual connection was ramped up. It made the story seem a little rushed in that regard.
This was my first time reading Ms. Ricci’s work and I think this was a great effort. However, if the chemistry had been developed a little more between Christopher and Samson I would have probably given this 4 stars. If you’re looking for a short paranormal read, this may be your cup of tea.
