Bold! Sizzling! Spontaneous Combustion Personified!
Denise Grover Swank has created a passionate, gripping, action-packed romance with an historical premise. Combine a little history about the lost Colony of Roanoke, Native American mythology, some paranormal activity of ancient curses and trapped Native American gods, and Ms. Swank really did create a distinctive read that stands apart.
Ellie Lancaster, our heroine, has lived her whole life on Roanoke Island where the Roanoke colony has been found. Ellie is an honest, feisty, snarky, caring and entertaining character that you will root for. She provides a few humorous scenes. For instance, in an early scene with one of Ellie’s male companions in her apartment, I was literally laughing out loud at her failed attempts to seduce him.
Ellie works in the New Moon Restaurant and helps out at her family’s Bed and Breakfast. Ellie Lancaster’s father had tried to teach her about her heritage as a curse keeper, but after her mother’s death in a home invasion, Ellie mentally blocked out all that he had taught her. Now the curse has been broken, her father is suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease, and Ellie desperately needs to know what she blocked in her mind as she and her fellow curse keeper have just 7 days to fulfill their destinies.
Collin Dailey, a Native American, is our hero and the other keeper. Collin has been preparing for the responsibility of his keeper duties his whole life. Collin is a bit of an enigma and I had a love/hate relationship with him. He is brooding, secretive, conceited, condescending, handsome and sinfully delightful. Even though Collin makes it quite clear at first that he isn’t the least bit interested in Ellie, those two have so much sexual chemistry, I thought they would literally melt each others’ faces off with the intensity they generated.
I’d like to share with you one of my favorite Collin quotes that left me swooning: “I want you to remember this. What you feel with me.” He kissed my mouth again, then met my gaze, his eyes bright with lust and need. “Remember that I am yours for now and forever. And no man will ever give you what I can.”
Ellie and Collin were two exact opposites and yet they play off of each other so perfectly. There’s plenty of sexual tension between the two main characters to get your heart racing and your blood pumping. It took a while for the romance to ignite, but when it did, it was erotically sizzling. There is some profanity and the love scenes are very descriptive. Together the two are forced into an uneasy partnership in a race against time as the Curse Keepers are all that stand between our world and its destruction.
Warning: There’s a thoroughly surprising twist at the end that will leave you screaming! I actually don’t mind cliff-hangers as long as I don’t have to wait to read what happens next. Fortunately, the sequel, the Curse Breakers, was released on April 29th. There’s also a prequel novella, this Place is Death, that is already loaded on my reader.
Bottomline: This was an incredible read. It elicited a multitude of emotions: humor, sadness, fear, and anger. The tie-in to the Roanoke colony is brilliant and creative. The chemistry between Ellie and Collin was realistic and romantic. Their passion was scorching. I am so invested in these characters that I’m obsessed and dying to read more! This was a great beginning to what promises to be an action packed, unique series filled with history, betrayals, and sizzling HOT romance.
