Time’s interracial article. Simon & Schuster slowly moves forward. The Swirl Awards finalists. Some hot X-Men. Video game love. And of course the Movers and Shakers of the month and some Bookshelf Porn!
Oh the Changing Times…
Last week Time Magazine featured an article about interracial romance books and their growing popularity.
“Devotees of romance fiction, predominantly female, are demanding that their favorite category be ethnically as diverse as the real world. One of the newest branches of the popular genre is interracial romance, which just a few decades ago would have been too hot to handle. After all, the first African-American romance imprint came on the scene less than 20 years ago. “Readers are able to say through social media and direct interaction, ‘I want to see myself in a romance,’ and not every romance reader is white,” says critic Sarah Wendell, author of Everything I Know about Love I Learned from Romance Novels.”
As much as I want to side-eye this article, I won’t because the simple truth is that although I know there are plenty of POC authors, that doesn’t mean the general public does. I can really only applaud the fact that more and more larger publications and media outlets are talking about it.
“No one knows more about how times have changed than bestselling romance author Kimberly Kaye Terry. Ten years ago, when she wrote her first book, an interracial novel, she had an editor at a big publishing house tell her, “I love it, but can you make the characters the same race? Pick a race, any race, but make them the same.” But Terry stuck to her guns, and has since written over 20 interracial romance novels for major publishers. “That’s what I do, and my readers love it,” she says with pride. But, she is quick to add, “the focus is absolutely never on the race. That’s not sexy. Let it be about anything but the color of their skin, because to me, that’s archaic thinking. We do not live in the ’50s.”

Simon & Schuster gets interwebby
Slowly but surely the big publishers are realizing that “location, location, location” isn’t just a mantra for realtors. They are realizing that the more outlets they make their books available the more they will sell. So along that vein, today it was announced that Simon & Schuster has established a partnership with online book subscription sites, Scribd and Oyster.
According to the S&S CEO, Carolyn Reidy:
“Consumers have clearly taken to subscription models for other media, and we expect that our participation in these services will encourage discovery of our books, grow the audience and expand our retail reach for our authors, and create new revenue streams under an author-friendly, advantageous business model for both author and publisher. We are delighted to work with Scribd and Oyster to offer this exciting new model for readers to find and read eBooks, and to do so in a manner that respects the value of our authors’ creative endeavors and supports our mutual goals of selling the most possible copies of their books.”

I Love Sexy X-Men…Duh
This isn’t really news, just plain fact. I love the entire male cast of the X-Men movie franchise. I HATE that the writers have deviated so far from the actual comics, but they’ve made up for it by casting the hottest freaking men EVARRR, so in the end it all evens out for me. I mean they’ve had a shirtless/naked Hugh Jackman scene in each movie. So seriously I can’t complain. However, my heart rate sped up and I broke out in a fan-girl sweat when I saw the cast for this latest X-Men movie: Hugh Jackman, James McAvoy and Michael Fassenbender! So to share my love of all that manliness in one movie, I decided to share clips from an interview with all three men.
Oh yeah, shake it 😉
Oh and the FAN ART segment just had me rolling on the floor.
Video Game Love
So I have a challenge for all of you. A few months ago I found this post online and had a great giggle at the concept: classic video games re-imagined as romance book covers. The Link and Zelda one is my favorite. This is yet another example of why the internet rocks. If you could re-imagine a video game (classic or otherwise) which would it be and what would you name it? I was a huge Final Fantasy fan, but recently the Hitman series has me addicted. Hmmm maybe “Assassin’s Heart”?
Movers and Shakers
Surrender by Brenda Jackson
I read this book a while ago (like years), so I was super surprised to see it sitting at the top of the charts this month. I can only assume that it has recently been released in ebook format, maybe an updated cover, or there was a sale and I missed it, queue sad face. Either way I downloaded it and fell in love with Brenda Jackson all over again. For those of you in the mood for a soldier romance, try this one out.
After a childhood spent moving from army base to army base, independent-minded Nettie Brooms is determined to secure a stable life–and never become involved with a military man. Then she meets incredibly handsome and charming Ashton Sinclair, a dedicated colonel in the U.S. Marines who’s intent on capturing her heart–no matter what it takes. Now Nettie’s wondering how a man she swore she would avoid could so easily test her resolve by igniting an irresistible passion she can’t walk away from.
Sergei (Volume 2) by Roxie Rivera
It’s no secret that series are very popular forms of fiction. There’s something about being able to follow characters throughout multiple journeys, especially when as a reader you’ve fallen in love with the characters. Roxie Rivera’s Her Russian Protector series has proven that series are popular for a a very good reason. Her follow-up to Sergei, the fifth book in the series, dropped last week and went “boom”. Sergei, Volume 2 is currently sitting pretty at the top of multiple best-seller lists. And really all I needed to see were the words; Russian, mob and passionate love affair. Consider this one a one click if you’ve already picked up the first volume.
Wedding dress designer and boutique owner Bianca Bradshaw always plays by the rules—until Sergei. The Russian behemoth broke down the walls guarding her heart as easily as he kicked down her front door. After a wild, passionate love affair that’s the talk of Houston’s underworld leaves them facing an unplanned but very much wanted pregnancy, Bianca can’t imagine a single day without Sergei in her life—and in her bed.
Freed from the clutches of the Russian mob by her tenacious love, former enforcer and prize fighter Sergei Sakharov intends to give Bianca exactly what she wants. He’s going to make that luscious, curvy beauty his wife and spend the rest of his life making her happy.
Or, at least, that’s the plan.
But Sergei quickly learns that no one ever really gets out of the life. When unfinished business threatens the family he’s trying to build with the woman who forever holds his heart, he’ll have to make a hard choice. To protect his pregnant wife, there is no line Sergei won’t cross.

Lakota Dreaming by Constance Gillam
I picked this book up on a recommendation and I am so glad I did! I’ve been searching for some IR/MC romances outside of the usual bw/wm pairing and was happy to read a book featuring a Native American hero. The writing is really well done and the relationship between the hero and heroine very well done. I though the dream/time travel was interesting and unlike other books with time travel not haphazardly done or clumsy. If you’re looking for a nice long read with love, heat and some intrigue this is worth your time.
Fired from her job as Editor-in-Chief of a New York fashion magazine, Zora Hughes travels to a South Dakota Indian reservation. She hopes to find answers to lifelong dreams her psychiatrist calls genetic memories. Zora dreams of a female ancestor who fled life as a slave and was aided in her journey to freedom by a Sioux warrior who would become her husband.
On the reservation, Zora meets Sheriff John Iron Hawk who aids and sometimes hinders her in her quest to find answers to the murder of her forebearer.
Zora sees the parallel between her life and that of her long dead ancestor’s. Try as she might, she can’t resist the lure of loving John Iron Hawk, a contemporary Sioux warrior.
But someone will do anything, including murder, to stop Zora from digging up the past.
Some Book AWESOME
Me and the internet have a love hate relationship. It allows me to explore everything and anything but it also presents me with multiple things to envy and covet. Case in point this website: www.gonereading.com. And while perusing said site, I found these:
So guess what I did? I gave up my eating out budget for the month and WENT TO TOWN!!! *Sigh* I hate you internet.
Some Bookshelf Porn
As usual I’ve got dibs, but I’m willing to share 🙂
