Treacherous Ties, by Jessica Lane, is the second installment in her Callaway Wolves series. This novella followed Route Refuge and tells the story of Carson and Mia.
I am not sure what I expected in this story, but the direction this series has taken was far from it. Where the first story was a sweet love story that showed the typical love will conquer all and that everyone deserves a happy ending, this installment is dark and sinister. Instead of this being the story of Carson and Mia and how they get together, their story is overshadowed by the larger plot line about Freddie.
In this book we learn about Freddie’s origins, how she came to the family and about a feud between her biological family and the Callaway family. The story does not allow for the reader to begin to enjoy the mating of Carson and Mia before it delves into this other plot.
While my words might imply that I did not like the book, that is not the case. I did enjoy reading the book. Because it is a very short work, only 50 pages, I was able to read the book in about an hour. While the story line curve was not expected, it did make me want to read the next installment to see how the author wraps this all up.
