Brainiac and the Yolo Bro, by U.M. Lassiter is an LBGT YA book. While I have read other books in this genre, I was a little lost with this one because it is apparently tied to another series by this author.
The book begins by letting you know that this story is a “flashback” written by a character, Ryan, from the other series. There is no background information provided and the reader is not told that this is NOT a stand-alone book.
The story includes, in a short period of time, almost every angst teens experience. While the story centers on the period of time in the main characters life before he chose to “come out” and all the struggles associated with that; it also touched on bullying, suicide, ethnic prejudice, jocks vs brains, etc. You name the teen issue, it was in this story.
Because I work in a setting similar to the one in the story I looked to this book as a possible recommendation for some struggling LGBT youth. The way the story is written, there is just too much included to be of help. Readers get lost in the story attempting to ferret out the main plot. There were too many questions left unanswered.
I must admit that if I had read the other series my view of this book would have probably been drastically different. It would still include too much in too little a span, but as a reader I would have felt more connected to the characters. This is listed as the first in this new spin off series and maybe after reading the next installment my view on this work might change.
