The Half of Us, by Cardeno C. was a great addition (Book 4) to her Family Series of work. While the connection to the Family Series was made through one of the main characters in this work, Jason Garcia, and the character Asher Penaz in Book 1 of the series, Something in the Way He Needs Me, it fit well into the overall theme of the Family books.
Jason Garcia is a doctor who, while saying he doesn’t hide the fact that he is gay, does everything a man in the closet would do. Abraham Green is an introverted school teacher that just lives his life. The two meet at a bar on Abe’s birthday, and the story takes off from there.
What I most enjoyed about this story was the way the author spun the tale gradually. When she introduced the ex-wife and the daughter, showing another connection between Abe and Jason, she set the stage for a great amount of possible action. When the son is introduced, with all his issues, I knew at that point that he, the son, would be the crucial element in the story.
Abe, through his knowledge of working daily with teens, was able to help this broken family begin to heal and move forward. Abe, a teacher, not even earning half of what Jason made as a doctor, was able to show Jason what it meant to be in love with someone and how to become a whole person.
I fully recommend this story for all readers who enjoy this genre. While this is a great stand-alone book, it does fit within a series.
