2016 New Year’s Resolution Book Companion: Love Yourself
Welcome to RNIC’s New Year’s resolution installment #4! As I mentioned in our first installment, we at RNIC have decided to share book companion guides for your New Year’s resolutions. So far we’ve covered the guides for the following:
Today we cover a less common resolution and goal, but one I think we should all aspire to at all times. It is the foundation to success in any endeavor, including the resolutions we’ve already covered. So if you hadn’t guessed it all ready, I’m talking about the resolution to LOVE YOURSELF…
RESOLUTION #4: LOVE YOURSELF
This may not be a very common resolution, but it is a very important one. So I’m sure some of you are thinking, “Girl, I love myself plenty.” That’s all well and good, but excluding masturbation, and narcissism, most adults don’t give themselves enough time in their days to indulge in themselves.
As a voracious reader, I can say that books give me a certain level of pleasure, that I miss when I’m unable to indulge in a good read. But books aren’t everything that make up the whole of my happiness (I know, crazy but true). Sometimes it is reminding myself that although I am awesome, I don’t need to be awesome 100% of the time. My average is still spectacular, and even when its not, that has to be okay. Loving yourself means accepting the good and bad. It means recognizing that there is some bad, but that doesn’t make it ugly. Whether it is taking a spa day, relaxing into meditation, or accepting the fact that your “flaws” are only monsters in your own mind, we should all take some time to get good with ourselves 🙂
All of that being said, below is today’s book companion guide, offering you some perspective and motivation for reaching today’s resolution:
The Scale by Mika Jolie
Twenty-seven year old, African-American, Minka Greene has to endure watching her twin sister marry the man she loves. Her weight is up, and her confidence is down. Not exactly the ideal time to meet the real man of her dreams.
The Scale opens in Martha’s Vineyard with Minka attending Keely and Blake’s engagement party at Martha’s Way, the beautiful inn owned and operated by the tall, blond, tattooed man with the piercing blue eyes. It just so happens Jason Montgomery is also Blake’s childhood friend and the best man. Dealing with a whirl of emotions, Minka faints in Jason’s arms.
When she wakes up naked in Jason’s bed after a night of passion, the Vineyard confirmed bachelor struggling with his own demons and the woman filled with self-doubt and pining for another man are joined in an experience that will change their lives.
Cree by LaShawn Vasser
Cree Jacobs has ever only loved one man, and for years she’s worked two jobs, sometimes three to support his dreams. Her entire world centered around Cameron Jacobs. What happens when his world no longer revolves around her?
Distance has kept them apart for so long that they’ve become virtual strangers. Feeling lost and alone Cree realized his goals were her goals. His dreams were her dreams until tragic events forced a path of self-discovery.
Sometimes you have to stop, regroup, and find your center. Will that center lead back to love?
His Love Lesson by Nicki Night
After finally dumping her controlling fiancé, Chey Rodgers is ready to live life on her own terms. Moving to New York to complete her undergrad degree is step one—but getting snowed in with a sensual stranger isn’t part of the plan! Now Chey can’t stop fantasizing about the incredible lover she never expects to see again. Until her new professor walks into the classroom…
Successful corporate attorney Hunter Barrington has one semester to prove himself at his alma mater. He’s put to the test when the sultry beauty who shared his bed at a Utah ski resort reappears in his life. A secret romance with his student could cost Hunter his academic future—especially when a scheming colleague sets her sights on the eligible lawyer. Will Hunter and Chey be able to avoid scandal and attain their dreams without sacrificing their passion?
Every book I’ve recommended throughout this companion series is one I’ve read. I chose the books above, specifically because while reading them, I ended up seeing pieces of myself in the characters depicted. Many of the hesitations and insecurities these characters struggled with, I’ve experienced as well. Reading how they come to grips with their insecurities was great motivation to work through some of my own 🙂 Stay tuned for Monday’s resolution book companion guide: ORGANIZE YOUR FINANCES.
