Life has a way of going awry when you least expect it, and Khalila Skyers learns this lesson the hard way. In one devastating blow after another, she loses her cosy existence. Then Douglas Blythe overtakes her life like a flood, and she’s not equipped to deal with an attraction that seems forbidden and overwhelming. But her body and heart want what they want, and leave her wondering if she ever knew herself at all.
Douglas is determined to help Khalila move beyond her obsession with the past and reach for love a second time. No matter how long it takes. No matter the distance. He’s going to prove he’s worth the risk.
What Inspired the Story
Several years ago, we hosted a golf event in Jamaica that saw many people coming from different countries to participate. As with many of my stories, 60,000 words get written from the starting point of ‘what if?’ This is exactly how The Thick of Things developed.
I like to say inside the mind of a writer is a terrible place. A single thought can go in many directions. See, being away from home is a chance to relax. Beautiful surroundings, resort lifestyle, and range of personalities made this story an interesting scenario.
I wondered what might happen if a woman is away from home, meets someone at one of these events and she’s attracted to him, where a situation like that might lead. As I thought about it, the story changed shape in my mind, but the seed germinated eventually into Douglas’s and Khalila’s story and what a ride that was.
